—

EN :

Launched on the 28th of may 2024 EarthCARE (Earth Clouds Aerosols and Radiation Explorer) is a satellite developped in collaboration between ESA and JAXA. The objective of the mission is to further our understanding of the radiation balance of Earth and it’s effects on the climate. Equiped with 4 instruments: a radar (CPR), a lidar (ATLID), a radiometer (BBR) and a spectromer (MSI), the satellite mesures vertical profiles of clouds and aerosols. Following the launch a calibration/validation (Cal/Val) phase is still in progress. LATMOS has been involved in the Cal/Val of both the radar and the lidar. This Cal/Val work has been ungoing using airborne and ground data.

Some flights of the airborne MAESTRO (Mesoscale organisation of tropical convection) and MORECALVAL (MObile Radar-Lidar-Radiometer EarthCARE CAL/VAL) campaigns were dedicated to the EarthCARE Cal/Val. The research plane ATR42 from SAFIRE (French Service of Instrumented Planes for Research and Environment) performed flights under the trace from the satellite to sample the same scene as EarthCARE. On board the plane are four instruments (radars: RASTA, BASTA, lidar: LNG and the RALI platform) associated to the measures of aerosols, clouds and precipitation at the plane altitude. This allows for quasi direct comparisons of CPR, ATLID and synergetic products. These instruments sampled specific conditions for each campaign: MAESTRO giving optimal conditions for lidar comparisons and MORECALVAL giving optimal conditions for radar reflectivity comparisons with passage through ice clouds. Results from both of these campaigns will be presented in this seminar. ACTRIS (Aerosol, Clouds and Trace gases Research Infrastructure) is a European research infrastructure producing high quality data and information on aerosols and clouds. Numerous ACTRIS sites are equipped with cloud radars, lidars and radiometers. As this instrumentation is similar to EarthCARE’s, the satellite can be seen as a space-based analog of an ACTRIS aerosol and cloud remote sensing observatory. Additionnaly, the ACTRIS Centre for Cloud Remote Sensing (CCRES) has established methodologies and procedures to manage and monitor the stability of the instrumentation. CCRES thus ensures that reliable and comparable products are available at each site. The ACTRIS infrastructure is then for EarthCARE’s CAL/VAL, in particular for the validation of CPR reflectivities. The comparison method of ground and satellite data and results from these comparisons will be presented in this seminar.
