Les \u00e9tudiantes et \u00e9tudiants du M2 de T\u00e9l\u00e9d\u00e9tection TGAE (Sorbonne U.), du master FRS (IPGP \/ UPCit\u00e9) et du master IOS (ENSG G\u00e9omatique) ont d\u00e9couvert les activit\u00e9s op\u00e9rationnelles des agences spatiales europ\u00e9ennes ESOC (Centre Europ\u00e9en des Op\u00e9rations Spatiales) et EUMETSAT (Organisation europ\u00e9enne pour l’exploitation des satellites m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques) situ\u00e9es \u00e0 Darmstadt en Allemagne, les 28 et 29 janvier 2025.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students from the M2 TGAE Remote Sensing program (Sorbonne University), the FRS master’s program (IPGP\/UPCit\u00e9), and the IOS master’s program (ENSG Geomatics) discovered the operational activities of the European space agencies ESOC (European Space Operations Center) and EUMETSAT (European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites) located in Darmstadt, Germany, on January 28 and 29, 2025.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mardi 28 janvier 2025 – ESOC \/ ESA – Tuesday, January 28, 2025<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Les \u00e9tudiant\u00b7es ont \u00e9t\u00e9 accueilli\u00b7es \u00e0 14h30 au Centre des op\u00e9rations (ESOC) de l\u2019Agence Spatiale Europ\u00e9enne (ESA) par Mme Gerber da Sousa<\/strong>, du d\u00e9partement communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gerhard Holtkamp<\/strong>, a ensuite assur\u00e9 la visite du centre avec une pr\u00e9sentation des diff\u00e9rentes facettes des activit\u00e9s de l’ESOC, de la salle de contr\u00f4le principale jusqu\u2019aux man\u0153uvres spatiales inh\u00e9rentes au contr\u00f4le des satellites europ\u00e9ens. La visite s\u2019est poursuivie dans le parc du centre, o\u00f9 il a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 les caract\u00e9ristiques et les objectifs scientifiques des maquettes de satellites et de lanceurs expos\u00e9es. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 de nombreuses ann\u00e9es pass\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019ESOC, Gerhard Holtkamp, aujourd\u2019hui retrait\u00e9, a ponctu\u00e9 la pr\u00e9sentation d\u2019anecdotes et de d\u00e9tails concrets, rendant l\u2019\u00e9change particuli\u00e8rement vivant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students were welcomed at 2:30 p.m. at the European Space Agency (ESA) Operations Center (ESOC) by Ms. Gerber da Sousa<\/strong> from the communications department.<\/em> Gerhard Holtkamp<\/strong> then gave a tour of the center, presenting the various aspects of ESOC’s activities, from the main control room to the space maneuvers involved in controlling European satellites. The tour continued in the center’s park, where he presented the characteristics and scientific objectives of the satellite and launcher models on display. Thanks to his many years at ESOC, Gerhard Holtkamp, now retired, punctuated the presentation with anecdotes and concrete details, making the exchange particularly lively.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pour conclure la journ\u00e9e, Daniel Mesples<\/strong>, responsable des op\u00e9rations des satellites \u00e0 l\u2019ESA (Agence Spatiale Europ\u00e9enne), a donn\u00e9 une conf\u00e9rence sur l\u2019organisation de l\u2019ESA, le programme COPERNICUS\/SENTINEL, et plus particuli\u00e8rement sur la plateforme Sentinel-5P. Un temps d\u2019\u00e9change a permis aux \u00e9tudiantes et aux \u00e9tudiants de poser leurs questions \u00e0 l\u2019issue de son intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To conclude the day, Daniel Mesples<\/strong>, Head of Satellite Operations at ESA (European Space Agency), gave a lecture on the organization of ESA, the COPERNICUS\/SENTINEL program, and more specifically on the Sentinel-5P platform. A question and answer session allowed students to ask questions at the end of his presentation.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

La promotion a \u00e9t\u00e9 accueillie par Marie Doutriaux-Boucher<\/strong>, sp\u00e9cialiste des services climatiques \u00e0 EUMETSAT, qui a introduit le r\u00f4le de l’organisation dans le contr\u00f4le des satellites m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques europ\u00e9ens. Aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de Nathalie Courcoux<\/strong>, elles ont pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es la salle des contr\u00f4les et les op\u00e9rations qui y sont men\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The promotion was welcomed by Marie Doutriaux-Boucher, climate services specialist at EUMETSAT, who introduced the organization’s role in controlling European meteorological satellites. Together with Nathalie Courcoux, they presented the control room and the operations carried out there.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

      La programme s\u2019est encha\u00een\u00e9 avec une pr\u00e9sentation du service de ressources humaines et des possibilit\u00e9s de stage ou de candidature au \u00ab Early Carreer Program \u00bb d\u2019EUMETSAT. M. Horn<\/strong> a ensuite comment\u00e9 les maquettes en taille r\u00e9elle, particuli\u00e8rement impressionnantes, expos\u00e9es dans le parc \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur des locaux. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Le d\u00e9jeuner a \u00e9t\u00e9 l’occasion pour les \u00e9tudiant\u00b7es de poursuivre les \u00e9changes avec les intervenant\u00b7es dans un cadre convivial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The program continued with a presentation by the human resources department on internship opportunities and applications for EUMETSAT’s Early Career Program. Mr. Horn then commented on the particularly impressive full-scale models on display in the park outside the premises. Lunch provided an opportunity for the students to continue their discussions with the speakers in a relaxed setting.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Au cours de ces deux visites, les \u00e9tudiantes et les \u00e9tudiants ont pu poser de nombreuses questions et ont rencontr\u00e9 des professionnel\u00b7les passionn\u00e9\u00b7es et engag\u00e9\u00b7es dans la transmission de leur savoir. Au regard des retours recueillis, ces deux journ\u00e9es ont apport\u00e9 aux participant\u00b7es des \u00e9l\u00e9ments indispensables \u00e0 leur motivation et \u00e0 leur orientation future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      During these two visits, students were able to ask numerous questions and meet professionals who are passionate and committed to sharing their knowledge. Based on the feedback received, these two days provided participants with essential information to motivate them and guide their future career choices.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
